Apply now for the 2008 Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians™
The Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians™ is open to all Canadian companies that have been in business for three or more years and have 10 or more employees. The awards recognize organizations for innovative and effective initiatives that lead the way to best practices for 50-plus workers while achieving organizational goals.
Applicants will be evaluated by an expert panel of judges from across the country. Application forms and entry details for the 2008 Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians™ are available online from the Workplace Institute. Written submissions will be followed by in-depth interviews with the applicants.
The deadline for applications is June 1, 2008. This year’s awards will be presented at the fourth annual Summit on the Mature Workforce to be held in Calgary, Alberta, on November 5, 2008.
2007 winners include HSBC Bank Canada, Merck Frosst, EDS Canada, Wal-Mart Canada, Home Instead Senior Care, Metasoft Systems Inc., Catholic Children’s Aid Society of Toronto and the Youth Emergency Shelter of Edmonton.
“We've learned a lot from these awards,” says Barbara Jaworski, author of KAABOOM! How to Engage the 50-Plus Worker and Beat the Workforce Crisis. In the four years since their inception, the awards have significantly raised employer awareness of the coming labour crisis as baby boomers, fully one-third of the workforce, approach retirement age. Jaworski warns that there will be fierce competition for the best and brightest, and notes that the war for talent is already on in such sectors as healthcare, construction and energy. The Best Employers Award for 50 Plus Canadians™ provides examples of how forward-thinking companies have met these challenges and establishes best practices and Canadian benchmarks. The results can help businesses in every sector capitalize on a valuable resource and avoid the coming talent crunch–whether they are award winners or not.

Buckhorn® Expands Intermediate Bulk Container Offering With CaliberTM Series
Buckhorn, a North American leader in reusable plastic packaging and material handling systems, proudly introduces its brand new CaliberTM Series of intermediate bulk containers (IBCs). Available in three sizes from 270 gallons to 315 gallons, the collapsible intermediate bulk containers in the Caliber Series, which complement Buckhorn’s existing CitadelTM family of IBCs, are the best suited IBCs in the industry for shipping and storing large volumes of processed foods, ingredients and other fluids.
Caliber IBCs are molded of FDA-approved, food grade plastic and have completely smooth surfaces to satisfy the strictest hygienic standards. They are collapsible, stackable when full or collapsed, and their space-efficient dimensions provide optimal cubing of transport systems, from rail cars to truck trailers. Caliber IBCs, which utilize a disposable bag liner, feature side and bottom discharge areas for quick, easy emptying. Bulk fluids are kept safe because they are put into a liner of virgin material every time. Because they are reusable, Caliber IBCs offer the perfect “green” alternative to barrels, cardboard or wood containers, providing companies a substantial savings on disposal costs and the waste of one-way packaging.
Reinforced corners and locking sides provide durability for handling under any conditions.
Four-way fork entry permits secure transport from any orientation, and their heavy-duty construction assures reliable performance in even extreme weather conditions 0° to 140°F (-17.8° to 60°C). Tamper evident seals can be placed on the lid and on discharge openings for added security. Calibers also come with an embedded RFID tag for tracking.
In adding the Caliber Series line to their existing Citadel IBC family, Buckhorn has assured its customers a variety of container choices for any application. Though designed for fluid and food ingredients, both Citadel and Caliber Series products can also be used for dry products such as powders, granulate and flakes. They are ideal for use in food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and any other industry in which hygiene is a primary concern.
Buckhorn, a Myers Industries, Inc. company (NYSE:MYE), is one of North America's leading providers of reusable plastic packaging systems and solutions, helping customers in the manufacturing, distribution, and food industries improve supply chain performance and reduce material handling costs. Buckhorn products include a broad selection of bulk and hand-held containers, pallets, and transport products, plus services ranging from interior dunnage to custom product design.
